52 Weeks of Organizing - Week 9

This past week I tackled another small project - my medicine cabinet. This week wasn't really about organizing one particular space, however. It was more about gathering all the medicine/vitamin stuff from various places in the house and bringing them together into one place. Keep like things together. Basic Organizing 101. It has always irritated me that we had some meds in the kitchen, some in the medicine cabinet, and then some in the linen closet. We also have a toddler who is now able to pull a chair up to the cupboard all by herself and climb onto the cupboard, or table, or into her high chair (without a chair's help!), etc. This has changed things quite a bit and has forced me to rethink the placement of medicines. Our most commonly used vitamins and meds had previously been in the kitchen on a little shelf in a cupboard. But with Ellie able climb up there now, I didn't feel comfortable keeping them there anymore. It was time to find a new, safer, home. Although the medicine cabinet in the bathroom is far from an ideal spot for meds, for now it will work. I am pretty sure this is only a temporary solution, though. Our less commonly used meds are still in a container in the linen closet. (A locked cabinet high up is a better option). We keep the bathroom door closed, and if it was open, it would be pretty much impossible for her to climb up onto the bathroom counter all by herself at this point. Still, I'm thinking that I might, in the near-ish future, put all the meds in a locked container on the top shelf in the linen closet. Some of you might wonder why I don't just do that right now....I am wondering the same thing. I guess it's because I have to re-think my linen closet space first, and then find the right containers. It's on the to-do list. Therefore, no before/after picture of the medicine cabinet. It would be less than astounding. Here's what I did:

Took all the meds from the kitchen into the bathroom and grouped them according to categories. Yes, we have lots of meds. It's been a rough year :-S

Categories in the medicine cabinet:

Stomach
Pain Meds
Anti-inflammatory
Inhalers/Nose sprays/Eye drops
Vitamins (2 shelves)

Categories in the linen closet container:

Cough drops
Cough/Cold/Flu
Heartburn

We also have a separate container for baby meds.

Because we have vitamins we take every day, I decided to have a pill organizer and keep that .on top of the fridge. The kitchen is more convenient for this. Once a week I'll refill the containers with our vitamins.

There you have it. A less-than-ideal solution for meds/vitamins. When I come up with a better solution, I'll let you know.

As I was typing this post, I headed into the bathroom to scope out the situation again, and I have come to the conclusion that the medicine cabinet idea is definitely temporary. It won't work for me. Nope, not good enough. Mostly because I believe it isn't safe enough. Hmmm...I guess this week's project was kind of a fail then? Well, not exactly. At least I have things grouped together now!

If you have a good solution for meds/vitamins storage, please let me know in the comments!

Menu Plan Monday (March 7, 2011)

I've been trying my best to follow the allergy specialist's advice and eliminate dairy. I definitely have not eliminated it, but I would say I've drastically reduced my consumption of it. Oh, but I love cheese. That one has been hard to give up. Right now, my recipes can be found by looking under my labels on my right hand side column. I have hopes of creating a recipe index on this blog soon, so that finding my recipes will be an easier process. I am going to try to improve my photos of food, but I'm not the greatest photographer in the world. We'll see how things go. By the way, my grocery challenge is going off swimmingly! (I don't know why I felt the need to put it that way...swimmingly...who says that anyway??) I went grocery shopping last week and got away with purchasing mostly fresh fruits and vegetables with very few canned/dry/bottled goods. That sure does decrease the grocery bill! In fact, the way things are going, I might be able to cut our usual bill almost in half!..At least until I run out of the staple pantry/freezer items.

Here's my dairy-reduced menu for the week:

Sunday, March 6
Lunch: Pizza (just a frozen one from the freezer)
Supper: Taco Salad (using leftover taco meat in freezer)

Monday, March 7
Sweet & Tangy BBQ chicken (using leftover roasted chicken from freezer) & coleslaw pitas, marinated bean salad (NEW)

Tuesday, March 8
Pasta in lemon caper sauce, Caesar salad

Wednesday, March 9
White chicken chili (NEW - adapting the recipe a bit), buttermilk cornbread

Thursday, March 10
Leftovers

Friday, March 11
Sweet & sour meatballs, rice, green beans

Saturday, March 12
Leftovers

Desserts/Baking/Other:
Homemade pita pockets
Honey whole wheat bread
Pita chips (made from homemade pita pockets) with hummus
Rhubarb crisp

Update on Ellie & Vaccine Decisions

I was still planning on having my blogging break extended a bit longer, but since we took Ellie to the pediatrician today for a check-up, I'm going to write up a quick (hopefully!) post.

She sees both a pediatrician and a family doctor for routine check-ups. Since she has chronic benign neutropenia, her pediatrician sees her more often. Today, I took her for a check-up, and it went well, other than me having to bribe her with a cookie to stand on the scale. We're trying to work on obedience, but we're not quite there yet :-). He examined her and talked to me about her eating habits, development, etc. He also ordered a complete blood count and reticulocyte count just to see where she's at right now. I was pleasantly surprised that she actually sat fairly still on my lap for the lengthy appointment.

Then, he mentioned one of the topics that always ups my anxiety meter: vaccinations. Depending on her blood test results today, he is going to let us know whether or not he recommends having her vaccinated. Our 18 month old has not yet received her 12 month vaccines, due to her health issues. I realize there is a ton of controversy about vaccinations, and I'll just straight up tell you where I stand on the issue. I'm about 65% for vaccines and about 35% opposed to vaccines. I am apprehensive. I am uncomfortable with the adjuvants in vaccines. I am uncomfortable about some of them being developed from aborted babies. I am uncomfortable with the serious childhood diseases that have virtually been eradicated, due in part, from the development of vaccines. I am also uncomfortable with the fact that since our daughter's immune system is quite low, she is at a higher risk of catching the more serious illness and developing more serious complications.

Although I'm pretty convinced that vaccines are good ways to eradicate serious diseases, I'm not convinced that vaccinating your children does not have the potential for other negative effects on the human body (think allergies, gastro-intestinal issues, perhaps attention deficit problems, etc.). Whether a good thing or a bad thing, the fact remains that a vaccine is an injection of a foreign substance into your body that elicits an immune response. The fact also remains that, although some people argue that there is a link between increased autism and increased vaccinations, the majority of children are still okay after being vaccinated (although I'm not so sure about the other long-term effects such as the aforementioned allergies, etc. which would be pretty difficult to prove one way or the other.)

Most importantly, however, is the absolute fact that God is sovereign. I have a very strong belief in the sovereignty of God, and therefore, my mind is better put at ease, regardless of what we eventually decide. God has the power to prevent any potential negative effects from the vaccines. He also has the power to prevent our daughter from catching any serious illnesses or having serious complications from them if she does not get vaccinated. That is not to say that we should not strive to make an informed decision and educate ourselves about the risks and benefits of vaccinations. I definitely need to do some more research about this whole thing before we make a decision. Although our daughter's immune system is low, because she is not in day-care and we will be homeschooling her, she has very little contact with sick people. This is another thing to consider.

Do any of you have any thoughts about vaccinations? Anyone very opposed or very for them? Anyone else kind of on the fence, like me? I'm curious, so please don't be afraid to share in the comments (in a respectful manner, of course!).

P.S. I didn't quite know how to fit this in to this post, but I wanted to share some of my feelings today about Ellie's health. A strange thing happened after we were driving home from the hospital after she had her blood test. Suddenly I just got all teared up and emotional and couldn't quite figure out why. I think it was probably because it suddenly hit me again -Having her get her blood taken today just brought to mind the fact that although we've been able to live a pretty normal life since Christmas (the last time she was hospitalized), her blood is still not "normal." (at least as far as we know - maybe this test will be different!). Some days it feels as though it was just yesterday that I was crying 90% of the time, unable to eat or sleep, wondering if our daughter had leukemia, being told at first she probably didn't and then being told she probably did. Other days, it feels like that nightmare was just that - a nightmare, a bad dream, and I find myself wondering, "Did that really happen? Did she really have a bone marrow test? Did we really hear that the news was very bad and lived one week believing our child probably had leukemia?" Oh how my heart goes out to those families who are really and truly dealing with a child with a terminal or serious illness. Since Christmas, most days I've been able to "forget" about her neutropenia. The only times I give it much thought is when we go out or I notice sick people. This has been such a blessing - living a pretty normal life for the most part. But today, a teeny-tiny bit of that anxiety has crept up on me again. The anxiety and nervousness of waiting for test results and the phone call from the doctor. The praying for good results, or at the very least, not worse results, feeling like I can't get anything done until I find out the results. It's a strange feeling again, and truthfully, I don't really like it.

Don't Mind Me

....I'm just fiddling around with my blog template and format. My blog will probably take on a few different looks before I settle on one to stick with, so bear with me for a while.

...And yes... I'm still on a blogging break. Really, I am :-)

Little Update & Blog Break

This week has been a crazy one. Lots of appointments and quite a bit of traveling around. The bedroom makeover is slowly getting finished. I just bought a chandelier for our bedroom (my birthday present) to replace a ceiling fan and need to paint the dress. After that, it's finished, I think.Needless to say, after this crazy week, I'm pretty wiped out. I saw the allergy specialist this past week, and I was told that I'm allergic to everything they test for. The thing is, so are most people they test, apparently. The testing they use is ultra-sensitive, which they look at as a pro, but I tend to look at as a con. It may pick up hidden "allergies" that are causing no symptoms.

I was told I should take allergy shots and then cut out all dairy and a few other things like junk food, chocolate, coffee, tea. I am a bit skeptical, to say the least. However, I figure, what will it hurt? If somehow my issues (dizziness, pain, swollen lymph nodes) are related to this, then it's worth a short, I suppose. It's not like there's a big risk involved. Besides, nobody else has any answers yet. The shots are no problem - just a minor inconvenience. The cutting out dairy part...well that's the part I'm dreading. I love cheese. I love sour cream. I love yogurt. I love butter. I love whipped cream. I hate milk, but I love cream in my coffee. Wait a minute...I'm not supposed to drink coffee anymore. That solves that one. So I'm not sure how exactly I'm going to go about this. I think I'll try his recommendations for 2 weeks, and then after that, I'll probably try eating dairy in moderation. I just can't give up pizza. At least not yet. I'm scheduling pizza night 2 weeks from tonight :-). And pizza without cheese...well that just wouldn't be pizza. So, with my grocery challenge to eat what we have on hand and this new diet thing, there's much planning to be done. Really, changing your diet isn't that big of a deal. It's just an inconvenience. People have to do it all the time, so I guess I should just get on with it.

On the home front, well, I am struggling a little bit. Our 1 1/2 year old is testing us...Oh yes, she is testing us. She can be the sweetest little girl in the world, but she needs to learn she is not the boss. Everything seems like a struggle these days. Nap time, meal time, bed time, and everything in between. I need wisdom. Much wisdom. Wisdom from above. There are moments where all I do is pray because I just don't know what to do sometimes. I've read tons of parenting books, and it all sounds so easy when you read about it. Living it out, especially 100% consistency, is another story. Especially when you don't feel the greatest, are too busy, and are worn out...which brings me to my next point. I'm taking a blogging break. As much as I like my little bloggy time, it just isn't a priority. By the way, neither is getting my bedroom finished, so that might be awhile yet. My spirit needs to be refreshed and renewed by the Living Water. That's not going to happen on blogging time. So...I'm off. Unplugging. Not sure how long I'll be gone or when I'll be back. But I will be back. I think. :-)

Menu Plan Monday (February 21, 2011) & Grocery Challenge

Our Valentine's Day meal last week was fantastic! The Beef Bourguignon I made was soooooooo good. I will definitely share the recipe on here sometime. It made such a large amount that I think we ate it for 4 days! No one complained! In fact, my husband was disappointed the one day because he didn't get to eat more of the leftovers.

Last week I cleaned out my freezers and discovered we have been blessed with a LOT of food! It really bothers me when I waste food, so I am really going to try to keep up with a freezer inventory to reduce wasting food. I am going to try my own little grocery challenge for the next little while. The plan is to do my very best to only spend money on fresh items such as dairy and fresh produce and really limit canned and dry goods purchased. I am going to try to get creative by using up what I already have in my pantry and freezer. I'm really looking forward to (hopefully) cutting down our grocery bills for the next while! Plus, I think it's kind of fun to try to use only what you have on hand. It helps a person get a bit creative for meal planning. Anyone else want to join in?? :-)

These are the weeks where I'm thankful to have a casserole or two in the freezer so I don't have to spend much time in the kitchen. This week is going to be a very busy one. We have quite a few appointments this week, so I'm keeping it simple since we'll have to eat out a few times due to my appointments. No specific meals on specific days this week since it's going to be so crazy. These are just a few ideas mostly from the freezer to hold us over on the days we're around for supper.

Cheesearoni Beef Casserole (from freezer) & Green Beans (this will give us leftovers)

Italian Soup (from freezer) & Cheese Toast

Waffles with Saskatoon Berry Sauce, Bacon, Eggs

Tortellini (from freezer) in Creamy Tomato Sauce

52 Weeks of Organizing - Week 6

Last week I was m.i.a. for the challenge, but I'm back this week. Nothing too crazy. Just my freezers. We are getting a bunch of meat soon, so I had to make room. I had tried to follow a freezer inventory awhile back, but I never really kept it up properly. After cleaning out my freezers and discovering things I had no idea were in there and having to throw out forgotten food, I now realize that taking the 5 seconds to mark off my paper when things are used up or when things go in my freezer can save me money by helping me waste less. This is just one thing I love about this organizing process - saving money! Plus, with my organized freezers (we have 3), we will no longer have to play the annoying game, "Which freezer is the ______in?" I think my husband will especially like this :-)

I just used this simple freezer inventory list here.

The before and after pictures would not be nearly as exciting as my closet before/after pictures,
so I don't have any pictures this time. Regardless of a lack of dramatic, noticeable results, as long as I keep up with my new inventory lists, my main goal for organizing this space has been accomplished: a place for everything, and everything in its place.
